Governance and Management
Governance and Management
Policy around quality, strategy and performance is set by Governing Authority or Údarás na hOllscoile and implemented through the University Management Team. Governance is defined by comprehensive legislation and statutes. In addition to general legislative requirements, the Irish University Sector implements the Code of Governance for Irish Universities 2019. The Office of the Secretary for Governance & Academic Affairs provides legal and governance oversight for the University. Key committees including Academic Council oversee policy implementation. The Deans who represent all of the University’s Colleges and Schools implement policy related to academic matters. Learners (students) are represented on all major committees.
Údarás and the Academic Council have a number of key subcommittees or decision-making fora that implement policy around quality, strategy and performance including:
- Quality Enhancement Committee
- Graduate Studies Board
- Research Committee
- Standing and Strategic Planning Committee
- Academic Council – Standing
- Finance and Resources Committee
- Colleges and School Boards
- Audit and Risk Committee
- Library Strategy Committee
- Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Committee
- Teaching and Learning Committee
Key University Meetings provide regular decision making fora for governance and policy implementation.
Policy related to internal monitoring and Quality Review (QR) is implemented by the Quality Enhancement Committee (QEC). The Director of Quality is responsible for executing the decisions of the QEC through the Quality Office and also for supporting all staff and units in policy implementation.
The Deputy President and Registrar and Director of Quality also meet with counterparts from other Universities through the Irish Universities Association (IUA) Quality Committee to discuss quality policies across the sector. The Director of Quality also represents the University at a number of National Forums arranged by the Higher Education Authority (HEA), IUA and Quality and Qualifications Ireland (QQI) and that informs the University’s key decision making fora and, in particular, the QEC and AC committees.
