Research Interests
- Advanced Functional Materials.
Smart materials for sensors, and instrumentation applied to healthcare and process technologies, using photonic and laser technologies to generate new materials and devices, and configure them in systems to extract signals and data via artificial intelligence such as sensor fusion and machine/deep learning.
Applications range from Manufacturing the Future/Digital Manufacturing; Smart Materials for Photonics & Sensing; Sensing for Challenging Engineering and Extreme Environments; to Healthcare and Assistive Technologies, applying advanced functional materials to create wearable/ implantable sensors for use in medtech, industrial and structural health monitoring.
2. Graphene and polymer functional polymer materials for sensors and devices.
Laser Induced Graphene using ultrafast lasers and adaptive optics inscription. 3D porous carbon nanomaterials.
3. Optical and Photonic Instrumentation.
Optical fibre technology and photonic materials for sensors and devices, ranging from functional chemically sensitive optical coatings, to laser inscribed photonic and conducting structures in transparent materials that affect their optical and electronic properties.
4. Optical Materials:
Advanced functional materials, and their optical, materials and chemical properties for structures and devices. Nano-electronics, materials characterisation and analytical methods.
5. Medical technologies:
Sensor instrumentation and measurement for healthcare. Strongly multidisciplinary and include photonic guided wave tomography for health care technology for monitoring older people at risk of falling, rehabilitation, gait and mobility analysis using pattern recognition and signal analysis.
6. Manufacturing & Process analytics:
Industrial/manufacturing processes using laser and photonic technologies for sensors and devices. Key enabling technologies, including laser, additive and subtractive manufacturing.
7. Environmental Monitoring & Sustainable Engineering:
Sensing of enviromental parameters, pH, moisture, turbidity, chemicals in soil, water for agricultural and marine applications. Recycling of polymers and plastics, microplastics separation.
