Nursing Management of Patients with a Haematological Condition

Offered next time in September 2024

This blended learning module was developed in collaboration with advanced specialist haematology nurses based at Galway University Hospitals. The module aims to further develop the knowledge and skills of nurses working in Irish haematology settings. The module focuses on both malignant and non-malignant blood disorders. Benign conditions addressed include anaemias (e.g. chronic, haemolytic), and bleeding and coagulation disorders. Non-malignant blood conditions with a high potential to become malignant (myelodysplastic syndromes, myeloproliferative disorders including polycythaemia) are also addressed. Malignant blood disorders addressed include the acute and chronic leukaemias, lymphomas and multiple myeloma.

The module is delivered over 10 weeks with 2 workshop days at the university.

The module is comprised of five units:
Unit 1: Needs of specific patient groups (Anaemias) 
Unit 2: Needs of specific patient groups (Haematological cancers 1: Non-malignant blood conditions with a high potential to become malignant and Leukaemias) 
Unit 3: Needs of specific patient groups (Haematological cancers 2: Multiple Myeloma) 
Unit 4: Needs of specific patient groups (Haematological cancers 3: Lymphoma)
Unit 5: Needs of specific patient groups (Bleeding and Coagulation disorders)

Target Market 
This module welcomes nurses who are currently working in specialist settings where patients with blood disorders are managed and have at least six months experience in this setting over the past two years.

Prerequisites

• All successful applicants must be registered nurses with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) and must be currently employed in a specialist Irish setting where they routinely care for patients with a blood disorder.
• All successful applicants must submit a letter from their Director of Nursing stating that they will be supported during the module.
