Module Description: To meet current and future healthcare challenges, nurses and midwives must be able to source, evaluate and use the best available evidence to support their practice. In addition they need to become proactive in developing  new evidence based  knowledge through research activity relevant to their clinical speciality. This module aims to develop nurses and midwives capacity to integrate research into their practice. The module has two major goals.  Firstly, to provide students with the required knowledge and understanding of the theoretical foundations of research, research methodologies and methods of data collection this should provide them with the skills to interpret and implement research findings in their practice. Secondly, it will provide students with the  key skill needed to promote their  independence in completing their own piece of research under the supervision of a supervisor. Therefore, this module has a specific focus on providing students with the knowledge and skills of “doing” research.

The module will be delivered using blended learning over 10 weeks and is subdivided into three units as follows:

Unit 1: Overview of research methods and methodologies
Unit 2: Close review of quantitative and qualitative approaches
Unit 3: Evidence synthesis

The module team are active researchers who enjoy sharing their experience of real life research.  

Target Market 
This module welcomes applications from nurses and midwives irrespective of practice setting.
