Biography

I studied Classics, Celtic linguistics and Indo-European linguistics at the University of Pisa, Italy, where I graduated in 2004. I was awarded a PhD in NUI, Galway in 2008 for a thesis entitled Amrae Coluimb Chille: a Critical Edition, a revised and expanded version of which was published in 2019 by the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies. 
I have taught widely in early Irish, Latin language, and historical linguistics, and my research area ranges from Celtic philology to the study of early medieval Irish literature (both Latin and vernacular), especially in regard to its manuscript transmission. More specific research interests include the question of Latin/Old Irish bilingualism in early medieval Ireland; the medieval Irish re-elaboration of the Classical tradition; the terminology of music and musical instruments in Old and Middle Irish sources; medieval martial culture; and, most importantly, the transmission of computistical and exegetical texts between Ireland, Brittany, and Francia in the Carolingian age.
The last topic was the focus of the research project that I directed between 2018 and 2023, entitled Ireland and Carolingian Brittany: Texts and Transmission (IrCaBriTT) and funded by the Laureate Consolidator Scheme of the Irish Research Council.
I am currently the supervisor of Dr Colleen Curran's Marie Curie project Breton Palaeography (BretPal, 2023-2025), which investigates the Caroline minuscule script of manuscripts produced in Brittany during the ninth and tenth centuries.
In 2021 I also created the Lutegerus Project in collaboration with the Italian association Collegium Lunae: the project focusses on the study of late medieval combat manuals - especially the famous Latin manual for one-handed sword and buckler preserved in the early fourteenth-century manuscript Leeds, Royal Armouries, I.33.

Research Interests

Historical linguistics (Indo-European, Celtic, and Latin). Ancient and Medieval bilingualism (language contact and code-switching). Early Medieval Irish religious literature. Manuscript transmission between Ireland and Brittany in the Carolingian period. Computus and the history of science. Music and musical instruments in the Early Middle Ages. Medieval martial culture (esp. Late Medieval combat manuals).
