Biography

I am an internationally recognised scholar in the field of modern Irish social history, particularly in the fields of gender history, feminist history, the history of childhood and youth and child welfare. My 2013 monograph with Manchester University Press, The Cruelty Man: Child Welfare, the NSPCC and the State in Ireland, 1889-1956 has advanced the history of child welfare, poverty, gender and class in modern Ireland and made a significant contribution to the field nationally and internationally.

Since then, I have conducted innovative research in the cognate areas of gender, sexuality, the history of childhood, youth, and institutions. My research has had an impact in traditional academic and non-traditional contexts, including in my role as a public historian and contributor to public policies, as my list of publications and other contributions demonstrates. I am regarded as a foremost expert in the history of childhood in Ireland, and one of the key historians working on gender history. This can be seen in my being commissioned to write chapters in the Cambridge History of Ireland: Volume 3 (2018) on ‘Men, Women and the Family from 1730-1880’, and the Cambridge Social History of Ireland (2017), a co-authored piece on the ‘History of Childhood from 1740’ with Susannah Riordan.

To date, my research has been cited in the New York Times and I have been interviewed by a range of media outlets internationally, including an article for CNN in 2019, contributions to BBC Women's Hour and other international media outlets. These pieces have drawn on my expertise of the mother and baby homes in Ireland and particularly the ‘Tuam Oral History Project’, for which I am the Co-PI. I also appeared on the Late Late Show in 2021 discussing the success of the Old Ireland in Colour Series. 

In 2020, my co-authored volume with Professor John Breslin Old Ireland in Colour (Merrion Press, 2020) won the An Post Book Award for 'Best Irish Published Book'. Our second volume in the series - Old Ireland in Colour 2 (Merrion Press, 2021), was the best selling Irish published hardbook non-fiction book in 2021 and our third volume will be published in Oct 2023.

I currently teach undergraduate modules on children and the state, gender in Irish history, twentieth century Britain, British social movements and the family in modern Ireland. I contribute to postgraduate programmes on the same topics and I also teach in Children's Studies. I am a Senior Research Fellow in the Institute for Lifecourse and Society and and co-director of the Irish Center for the Histories of Labour and Class in the Moore Institute.

Aside from my teaching and research, I am the Chair of the Irish History Student's Association (IHSA) and past President of the Womens History Association of Ireland.


Research Interests

The history of gender in Ireland and Britain. The history of child protection and child welfare, social history of Britain and Ireland from the nineteenth century, history of family, history of childhood and more recently, the history of youth and youth culture. History of social care institutions in Ireland and the history of domestic violence.

My teaching interests include nineteenth and twentieth-century Irish and British social, political, and social policy history; women and gender; institutional histories; welfare history and the history of childhood and the family in Ireland.
