Dr. Mary Noelle Harris

Biography

  I graduated with a B.A. in Irish and Spanish (1978), and Higher Diploma in Education (1979) and MA in Old Irish (1984) from University College, Cork.  I worked as a teacher in Grenada, West Indies, and in Cork. After returning to UCC for undergraduate History, I went on to Cambridge for doctoral studies leading to a PhD (1992), published as The Catholic Church and the Foundation of the Northern Irish State (Cork University Press, 1993). From 1992-6 I taught Irish Studies at the University of North London, directing the undergraduate programme from 1993-6. I joined the History department in NUI Galway in 1996.  

My teaching and research interests have focused on Irish church-state relations; partition and the Northern Ireland conflict; and the cultural, social and political history of late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Ireland. I contribute to MA programmes in History and Irish Studies, and I have supervised 10 Ph.D. theses to completion. Recent publications include articles on Patrick Pearse, the Irish Review and the rebirth of Ireland (2015) and Pearse’s political thought up to 1913 (2016). I consider my work on the Gaelic Revival cross-disciplinary. My current research project examines Eoin MacNeill’s cultural and political activism and I use MacNeill as a prism through which idealism and pragmatism in the revolutionary period and its aftermath can be examined.

I was co-ordinator of NUI Galway's programme commemorating the 1916 Rising  in 2016.  I co-edited (with Nicholas Canny and Thomas Boylan) Ireland 1916-2016: The Promise and Challenge of National Sovereignty. Dóchas agus Dúshlán na Ceannasachta Náisiúnta (2017). I have contributed to numerous Irish language documentaries on the revolutionary period.  This year I have spoken in NUI Galway, Dublin, Castlebar and Nenagh at events in connection with the 125th anniversary of Conradh na Gaeilge. I am a member of the Irish government's Expert Advisory Group on Commemoration.
