Biography

Professor Emeritus in History at NUI,Galway. Educated NUI,Galway and Peterhouse, Cambridge. Former Dean of Arts and Vice-President (External Affairs) at NUI, Galway. Former member of the Senate of the National University of Ireland and of the Irish-USA Fulbright Commission. Member of the Council of State, 2011-2018. Sometime member of the Irish Manuscripts Commission and the Irish Placenames Commission, and Cathaoirleach of Údarás na Gaeltachta. Fellow of the Royal Historical Society.
Has held visiting appointments at University of Toronto and NYU, and has lectured extensively at universities in North America, Australia, the UK and continental Europe. Has acted on editorial boards (advisory) of several specialist journals in the discipline History.
Publications are mainly in modern Irish British history and on historiography. A select list of publications to 2014 listed in the festschrift, Culture and Society in Ireland since 1750, edited by John Cunningham & Niall Ó Ciosáin (Lilliput. 2015).
