Biography

Nessa Cronin is Assistant Professor in Irish Studies, Centre for Irish Studies, at the School of Geography, Archaeology and Irish Studies, University of Galway, Ireland. She has published widely on various aspects of Irish Literature, Cultural Geography and Environmental Humanities. In September 2019 she was elected to the National Committee of Future Earth Ireland, and is currently Vice-Chair of the Irish Humanities Alliance, based at the Royal Irish Academy, Dublin 2. In December 2023 she was awarded a GATES MaCI Senior Research Fellowship and residency at the University of Grenoble-Alpes (June 2024) and St Cross College, University of Oxford (November 2024), for her work in Environmental Humanities in a European context.

Nessa was awarded a Dean's Award for Doctoral Supervision at the College of Arts, Social Sciences and Celtic Studies in January 2020, and welcomes MA and PhD applications from interdisciplinary research scholars working in the areas of Modern/Contemporary Irish Literature, Irish Cultural Geography, Environmental Humanities, Community and Deep Mapping Practices, and Eco-Social Arts Practice. She is also currently mentoring 3 Postdoctoral Scholars in Ireland, Canada and Germany, and particularly welcomes Postdoctoral research applications in any of the areas outlined above. She also works on community mapping projects in Clare, Galway and Mayo with artists, activists and community groups on socially-engaged projects investigating issues concerning place, language, culture and the environment in contemporary Ireland.       

Nessa read English and Philosophy for her undergraduate degree at Trinity College, Dublin (1998) and received an MA in Continental Philosophy and Literature from Warwick University (2000). Her doctoral thesis, The Eye of History: Spatiality and Colonial Cartography in Ireland, focused on the visual and linguistic construction of the modern Irish map through a critical examination of four key moments in Irish cartographic history. She was awarded a PhD in Irish Studies by NUI Galway in 2007, and was the recipient of an IRCHSS Postgraduate Scholarship, Arts Faculty Fellowship, and a Notre-Dame Summer School Fellowship for her doctoral research.

She has published widely in Irish Studies, Cultural Geography and Environmental Humanities, and contributed to international peer-reviewed journals such as, Éire-Ireland, New Hibernia Review, Journal of Nordic Irish Studies, European Journal of English Studies, Irish Studies Review, Journal of Historical Geography, The Cartographic Journal and Dialogues in Human Geography. She is co-editor of 'Embodied Geographies of the Nation', Irish Review (2018), Anáil an Bhéil Bheo: Orality and Modern Irish Culture (2009), Landscape Values: Place and Praxis (2016) and the forthcoming volume Lifeworlds: Space, Place and Irish Culture. She is currently completing her monograph on the making of Irish colonial space, Making Space: Cartography and Colonial Governmentality in Ireland. She has been the recipient of 3 Irish Research Council awards, and bursaries from the European Science Foundation and Culture Ireland, and has been awarded visiting fellowships in University of Stanford, Univeristé de Nantes, University of Concordia and University of Grenoble-Alpes, amongst others.

Her current work on Irish Literary and Cultural Geographies has involved the development of the interdisciplinary Irish Place Studies network, Ómós Áite at the Centre for Irish Studies, NUI Galway, and she is the Irish co-convenor of the Mapping Spectral Traces International Collaborative in association with Professor Karen E. Till and Professor Gerry Kearns, Space&Place, Department of Geography, Maynooth University, Ireland.

She also works in the area of Environmental Humanities and Creative Geographies and has co-curated events and exhibitions such as Mapping Spectral Traces IV (Black Box Theatre, Galway 2012), Interpreting Landscape/Rianú Talún, (NUI Galway 2014) and is the Director of Iarsma: Fragments from an Archive, the Tim Robinson Artist-in-the-Archive Project (Galway 2015-16).

Nessa is the author of several articles, reviews and conference reports on many aspects of Irish literary geographies and historical cartography, including contributions to Irish Studies Review, Éire-Ireland, New Hibernia Review, Journal of Nordic Irish Studies, European Journal of English Studies, Journal of Historical Geography, The Cartographic Journal and Dialogues in Human Geography. Her book chapters include contributions to Irish Contemporary Landscapes in Literature and the Arts (2011), and India and Ireland: Colonies, Culture and Empire (2006) and more recently to the Routledge International Handbook of Irish Studies (2021). She is also the co-editor with Seán Crosson and John Eastlake of Anáil an Bhéil Bheo: Orality and Modern Irish Culture (2009).

Her current work on Environmental Humanities and Irish Literary Geographies has involved the development of the interdisciplinary Irish Place Studies network Ómós Áite at NUI Galway, and the International Network, Mapping Spectral Traces.
