Biography

Dr Catherine Morris is a Fellow of the O’Donoghue Centre for Drama, Theatre and Performance & Lecturer in Culture, Community and the University at NUI Galway. Her research interests include playwriting, European Capitals of Culture, digital theatre archives, curation as performance, modern European drama and human rights; and feminist visual art. Her monograph, Alice Milligan and the Irish Cultural Revival (Four Courts Press) uncovered the forgotten arts and feminist theatre practice of one of the founders of modern Ireland. In 2016, she worked with Nerve Centre in Derry to launch a graphic novel of Milligan’s life as part of the Key Stage 3 National Curriculum for schools in Northern Ireland. Her National Library Exhibition Revival was opened by Fiona Shaw and designed by Martello Media; the archives rich multi-media instillation explored human rights in the context of anti-colonialist feminist arts practice in Ireland.  She gifted her extensive archive to Omagh Public Library as a homage to the Peace Process. She was appointed curatorial advisor on the Irish Museum of Modern Art exhibition El Lissitzky: the Artists and the State. Her latest work Intimate Power: Autobiography of a Cityis a hybrid form of performance-based (auto) biography that montages memoir with photos and recordings was made on location at resonant sites across Liverpool; exploring how a personal sense of belonging is a collective experience saturated in the history and public culture of the city.
