Biography

Dr. Mamoona Asghar has been working as a Lecturer (Above the Bar) in the School of Computer Science, University of Galway, since January 05, 2022. She has ~18 years of lecturing and R&D experience in Ireland, UK, and Pakistan since 2006.

She received her Ph.D. from the School of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering, University of Essex, Colchester, U.K. 2013. Her Ph.D. was funded by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan.

During her academic appointment at the public-sector university of Pakistan (IUB), she received a Competitive Research Grant (No.:6282/Punjab/NRPU/R&D/HEC/2016) awarded by the Higher HEC, Pakistan under the National Research Program for Universities (2016).  

In 2017, she received a prestigious Marie Sklodowska Curie (MSC) Career-FIT International Fellowship for 03 years at the Athlone Institute of Technology (AIT), Athlone, Ireland, for the project titled "Distributed analytics for a large urban CCTV system". This award was supported by the Marie Sklodowska-Curie grant agreement No. 713654 under the Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme funded by the European Union. This MSC fellowship was a collaborative project with an industry partner, Evercam Ltd, Dublin. She was awarded an MSCA Postdoc fellowship grant (Project: SISSViD) in 2023 for mentoring a postdoc at the School of Computer Science, Galway, for a duration of 2 years.

She has successfully supervised 06 PhD students to completion in Ireland and Pakistan. She is a recipient of 02 President Doctoral Scholarship (PDS) grants to supervise PhD students (2019 and 2020) at TUS, Athlone Campus, Ireland. Currently, she is supervising 04 PhD students under COSE-2022, Hardiman-2023, Chinese Postdoctoral Scholarship 2023, and Irish Research Council (IRC) Early Career Award-2024 at the University of Galway. 

She has published several indexed journal articles along with numerous international conference papers. She is actively involved in reviewing research articles for renowned journals/conferences and has participated as a session chair. She is also an IEEE Senior Member. 

Research Interests

Cyber security: Cryptology, Malware and Intrusion detection systems, Social Engineering (DeepFakes, Dark Patterns), Threat Modeling, Blockchain, Privacy Engineering, General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
Artificial Intelligence: Deep Learning (Computer Vision), Object and Event detection from visual data, Supervised and unsupervised Machine Learning, Fuzzy Systems, Ontology.
Others: Visual Data Processing / Analysis, Video Encoder Systems, Video Quality Analytics, Edge Analytics, and Internet of Things (IoT) (smart systems).
