Biography

John is a lecturer in the Accountancy & Finance Discipline in the J.E. Cairnes School of Business and Economics at University of Galway. John is a graduate of Dublin City University (DCU) having completed a B.A. in Accounting & Finance along with a MSc in Finance and Capital Markets. Following this, John completed his Chartered Accountants Ireland training contract (ACA) with KPMG Corporate Finance in Dublin. Prior to joining University of Galway, John was an assistant professor in accounting in DCU for seven years.

John completed his PhD at DCU in 2021. His thesis focused on how financial literacy manifests itself as a social practice. It was undertaken in collaboration with Teagasc and explored financial literacy on family farms. John is the Chair of the 2023 IAFA Conference being hosted in University of Galway.

John teaches in the area of financial reporting and corporate finance and has experience of teaching at undergraduate, postgraduate, executive education, and professional examination levels.

Research Interests

John's research interests are in the field of financial literacy, both at a personal, and MSME level. Specifically, he is interested in exploring financial literacy through a social and cultural lens to understand what constitutes financial literacy in different contexts and the implications this has for issues such as financial inclusion and financial education. John is also interested in the area of MSME financial management with a particular focus on micro and small enterprises.
