Active Projects

The NBL has multiple projects underway of which the most significant are:

  • ARMES: Developing a new analytical methodology for protein analysis based on polarized multi-dimensional fluorescence spectroscopy.  We've just started the Downstream Protein Analysis - Polarized Emission Spectroscopy (DPA-PES), project funded by Taighde Éireann – Research Ireland (grant 22/FFP-A/10271, 2024-29).
  • Bioanalytical: Rapid analytical methods for biopharmaceutical manufacturing (particularly for cell culture media).
  • Fluorescence Microscopy: Using advanced single molecule based methods for studying protein-protein and protein-polymer interactions.  This links in with our biopharmaceutical related research.
  • Solid-state analysis: Raman and chemometric based methods for low content quantification (LCQ) and Raman based size analysis of nanosuspensions.

Details and Information about some of our past projects are available here:

  • Forensics:  application of Raman spectroscopy and chemometrics for illicit narcotic analysis.
  • pH sensing:  Developing lifetime based pH sensors.
  • Petroleum Analysis:  Using time-resolved fluorescence to analyst crude petroleum oils and hydrocarbon bearing fluid inclusions.
  • Metal Enhanced Fluorescence:  Developing nanostructures and methods.
