Mary received her BSc (Hons) in Pharmacology from University of Galway after which she completed a Higher diploma in Education (University of Galway). She taught biology and mathematics through the medium of Irish at Colaiste Chroí Mhuire, An Spidéal.

Mary developed strong links with the University where she entered groups of Transition and 5th year students into Stem cell debating competitions. Mary then did her PhD on models of MS within the MS Research Laboratory at University of Galway. Following completion of her PhD, Mary carried out postdoctoral work in the Parkinson’s research group in Pharmacology & Therapeutics and at a cancer biology laboratory, both in the University of Galway. From 2014, she has coordinated Masters programmes in the School of Natural Sciences at University of Galway. Since 2023, she is the academic director of the MSc. In Biomedical Science programme at the University of Galway.
