Programme Team
Terry Smith
Terry Smith is the NUI Galway Professor of Biomedical Engineering Science. He is the co-director of the MSc. in Medical Technology Regulatory Affairs, and academic director of an MSc. in Biomedical Science (full-time). His research is focused on the design and development of novel molecular diagnostics tests for infectious diseases, and their clinical application. Terry has a BA. Moderatorship Degree (Microbiology) from Trinity College Dublin and a D.Phil. degree from Oxford University.
Terry is a founding member and the former director of NUI Galway’s Biomedical Science and Engineering Research Institute, the National Centre for Biomedical Engineering Science (NCBES). Terry was appointed Vice President for Research at NUI Galway in 2008, a position he held until December 2012.
His research involves investigations of the molecular basis of disease, in particular, infectious diseases, with a focus on the development and application of novel molecular diagnostics tests for diagnosis and therapeutic monitoring. He is the author/co-author of over 120 peer-reviewed international journal papers, and co-inventor of 10 granted patents, with over 50 patent applications pending across 8 patent families. Molecular Diagnostics technologies he co-invented have been licensed to four companies, including three global in vitro diagnostics companies, and one Irish diagnostics company, for commercial development.
Terry is a co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of an NUI Galway spin-out company, Advanced Molecular Systems Ltd. (AMS), which was incorporated in 2012. AMS provides molecular diagnostic test development services to client companies, and currently employs four staff.
