Biography

Dr. Leo Quinlan is a Principle Investigator in Human Physiology at NUI Galway and Funded Investigator in the SFI CÚRAM Centre for Research in Medical Devices, NUI Galway.

He graduated with a BSc in Biochemistry and a PhD in Stem Cell biology from NUI Galway. He work as a  postdoctoral researcher and trained at the Welcome Trust funded, Cellular Physiology Research Unit (CPRU) in University College Cork under Prof. Brain Harvey. He carried out postdoctoral training in electrophysiology at the August Krogh Institute, University of Copenhagen Denmark.

He has been a lecturer in Physiology at NUI Galway since 1999 and his research interests focus on the interface between human physiology and medical device development with a particular emphasis on electrophysiology and neuromodulation. He has supervised 6 PhD students to graduation, and has published over 30 international peer-reviewed journal papers.

Dr. Quinlan is a member of a number of professional societies including the Physiological Society, Royal Academy of Medicine in Ireland and the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) Medicine and biology.

Research Interests

My research interest focus on the interface between human physiology and medical device development with a particular emphasis on electrophysiology and neuromodulation. 

My group employs a multidisciplinary to tackle scientific problems at the level of single channels, to single cells, all the way up to the whole body human physiology and psychology. 

Our clinical targets include Parkinson's disease, diabetes, autism, deep vein thrombosis (DVT), interstitial cystitis and peripheral nerve regeneration.
