Biography

Grace Callagy is a Professor of Pathology at NUI Galway and Consultant pathologist at Galway University Hospitals. She obtained her MB from NUI Galway. She did her professional training in general medicine in the Mater Misericordiae hospital, Dublin and then commenced in pathology on the North Dublin Hospitals Rotation and at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge, UK.  Professor Callagy received her PhD degree from the University of Cambridge in 2004 where she worked in Professor Carlos Caldas’ laboratory on the molecular profiling of breast cancer. In 2004, she returned to Galway. Practicing as a consultant Histopathologist, her special interest is breast cancer. The research of her group is focused on studying molecular events involved in breast cancer progression and the identification and validation of biomarkers as targets for diagnosis, prognostication and prediction of response to treatment of breast cancer. 

Professor Callagy is a member of the European Working Group of Breast Screening Pathology and a member of the United Kingdom National Co-Ordinating Committee for Breast Pathology and a member of the Molecular Pathology Sub-committee of the Faculty of Pathology, RCPI. She has served on the Scientific Advisory Board of the Breast cancer Campaign (2011 – 2014); on the Pathological Pathological Society of Great Britain and Ireland committee, (January 2008 – 2010); and was a Committee member of the Irish Association for Cancer Research (March 2009 – March 2013).  

Research Interests

My research interest is breast cancer.  Invasive breast cancer is known to be a heterogeneous group of cancers comprising at least six different subtypes. Our work focuses on identifying the molecular events involved in breast cancer progression and the identification and validation of biomarkers as targets for diagnosis, prognostication and prediction of response to treatment for different subgroups of breast cancer.  To this end, we evaluate biomarkers in fixed tissue samples using tissue microarrays that have been made from breast cancers managed at University Hospital Galway. We are currently focusing on the refinement of diagnosis of subsets of triple negative breast cancers.

Accurate diagnosis and classification of breast cancer is essential in order to determine the most appropriate treatment for patients.  In collaboration with members of the European Working Group of Breast Screening Pathology, I have been involved in several international multi-institutional clinical pathology studies concentrating on inter-observer agreement in the quantification of the proliferation markers; the diagnosis of micro-invasive cancer; the assessment of predictors of response to neo-adjuvant chemotherapy and the evaluation of micro-metastatic disease in sentinel lymph nodes.

Teaching Interests

As Professor of Pathology and Head of Discipline since 2004, I have been responsible for the undergraduate taught programmes delivered by the Discipline of Pathology at NUIG. I was the module director for Pathology (PA204), Forensic Medicine and Elements of Pathology (PA405) from 2004 until 2010. In 2008, I restructured the undergraduate medical teaching courses and into the integrated modules Health and Disease I (MD201) and II 2008-2010 Forensic Medicine (MD301).

I served as a external examiner for the Final MB Part I exam at Cambridge University from 2013 to 2015 and I am currently the extern examiner for Laboratory Medicine at Trinity College Dublin.
