Under the Microscope
‘Under the Microscope’ is a microscopy outreach pilot programme designed to promote and explore core Science, Technology, Engineering, & Maths (STEM) skills for children in primary school, in a fun and educational environment using the Royal Microscopy Society’s (RMS) Microscope Activity Kits. The pilot scheme for the 2014/2015 academic year was funded by EXPLORE, NUI Galway and the team are hoping to secure further funding to continue the project in Irish schools. Since it was launched, 4 rural schools in county Galway and 1 in county Mayo were visited by ‘real life scientists’ to set up and demonstrate the kits to both students and primary school teachers. Each of the schools visited kept the kit for a minimum of 4 weeks allowing over 450 primary school students to have access to a microscope on a daily basis for this period.

School Visits
Anatomy at NUI Galway operates an Outreach Program for schools, the aim of which is to promote general awareness and understanding of Anatomy to school children at both primary and secondary level. These sessions are designed to be a fun way to learn the science of the human body and to instill a love of learning and a thirst for knowledge at a young age. Not only does the Outreach program visit schools, but also on occasion invites school groups to the University for a single event or for a day full of science activities.

Brain Awareness Week
During Brain Awareness Week in March Anatomy staff and postgraduate students, along with other members of the Galway Neuroscience Centre, contribute to an interactive brain exhibition in the Aula Maxima at NUI Galway. Primary and Secondary school students visit the exhibition and learn about how the brain and nervous system work. Students can also test their mirror writing skills and hand eye motor co-ordination, can look at brain tissue through a microscope, be fooled by optical illusions, and see how fast they can assemble a brain model.
