CONGRATULATIONS

1. Congratulations to Dr Patrick Neligan on the publication of his textbook, co-edited with Prof Clifford Deutschmann, titled ’Evidence Based Practice of Critical Care’ and published by Saunders Elsevier. 

2. Congratulations to Drs Mary White and Su Ng who were jointly awarded the prize for clinical excellence in Anaesthesia at Specialist Registrar level at Galway University hospitals in December 2010. 

3. Congratulations to Drs Srinivasan Karthikeyan and Niall Kennedy who were jointly awarded the prize for clinical excellence in Anaesthesia at Basic Specialist Trainee level at Galway University hospitals in December 2010. 

4. Congratulations to Dr Brian Kinirons who was awarded the prize for Best Clinical teacher at Galway University hospitals in December 2010. 

5. Congratulations to Dr Brian Harte, senior author on the recent publication ’Comparison of three cuffed emergency percutaneous cricothyroidotomy devices to conventional surgical cricothyroidotomy in a porcine model.’ Published in the British Journal of Anaesthesia (See "Recent Publications" below). 

6. Congratulations to the Dr John McDonnell, senior author on the recent publication ’Ganglion blockade may decrease pain following upper limb trauma surgery: a case series.’ Accepted for publication in Anaesthesia  (See "Recent Publications" below).

7. Congratulations to Dr Olivia Finnerty on winning the O'Beirne Medal for her oral presentaion on Tap is a Paravertebral Block and Dr Ram Subramaniam on winning the Costello Medal for his poster presentation on Tracheal Intubation In Patients with Cervical Spine Immobilisation: A Comparison of the Airwayscope ® , LMA CTrach ® and the Macintosh Laryngoscopes at the 2009 Western Anaesthesia Symposium.

CENTRE FOR PAIN RESEARCH

On behalf of NUI Galway, President Ó Muircheartaigh formally launched the recently approved Centre for Pain Research (CPR) on October 03rd 2007. 
In attendence were joint directors Dr. David Finn and Dr. Brian McGuire who welcomed members from a wide range of faculties within the college including Anaesthesia, Psychology and Pharmacology along with medical professionals from UCHG. Also attending the launch were two guest speakers, Professor Chris Main (University of Keele) who gave a keynote address on"Psychological Barriers to Effective Pain Management" and Professor Irene Tracey (University of Oxford) who spoke on  "Advances in Pain Neuroimaging" . 
"In summary the Centre for Pain Research (CPR) aims to provide a centre of excellence for interdisciplinary research across the National University of Ireland (NUI), Galway and the Health Service Executive (HSE) and related health service agencies, with the aim of advancing the scientific understanding of pain from the basic sciences to the population level"
