Welcome to the Discipline of Anaesthesia
Research
Anaesthesia is centrally involved in both clinical and basic scientific research. Active areas of basic/translational research include the study of gene and stem cell therapies for ALI/ARDS and myocardial preconditioning. Active clinical research programmes exist in the investigation of the utility of medical devices, particularly devices used in regard to the airway and in regional anaesthesia and the management of acute postoperative pain.
Collaborative research links have been developed with other Disciplines within the Medical School and College of Medicine and Health Sciences. In addition, interdisciplinary links are being developed within cohort of expertise being assembled at the Regenerative Medicine Institute [REMEDI] and at National Centre for Biomedical Engineering Science [NCBES] located on the NUI Galway campus. Members of the discipline play a significant role in the Centre for Pain Research at NUI Galway. In addition productive collaborative links have been developed with researchers at with several other Irish third level institutions.
