Welcome to the Discipline of Paediatrics
About Us
The Academic Department of Paediatrics NUI Galway is located in the Clinical Science Institute of NUI Galway. The academic team is comprised of Professor, Senior Lecturer, Lecturer, Tutors and Honorary Clinical Lecturers.
In addition to paediatric teaching and instruction at University Hospital Galway, clinical teaching and experience is delivered at the NUI Galway affiliated hospitals/medical academies including, Mayo General Hospital Castlebar, Sligo General Hospital, Letterkenny General Hospital and Portiuncula Hospital Ballinasloe.
With the assistance of the affiliated academies, it is the goal of the paediatric department to provide an informative, friendly and invaluable learning experience.
Postgraduate
Paediatric post-graduate training includes approval for 2 General Paediatric SPRs, 1 Community Paediatrics SPR and 4 basic specialist trainees (BSTs) in General Paediatrics. In addition, we provide training for up to 5 General Practice trainees on a 6-monthly basis. Post graduate education is structured to provide consultant-led lecture series, weekly case presentations; daily consultant led clinical hand-over sessions and bedside teaching.
Postgraduates are encouraged to become involved in research projects during their period of attachment as well as to present at national/international meetings. A specialised paediatric handbook is published by the academic paediatric department for use by paediatric NCHDs to assist with the learning experience.
Research
Research is primarily clinically based. On a post-graduate level, MD and MSc supervision is provided.
