Biography

Dr Catherine Anne Field, (BSocSc, MSc, PhD) is lecturer in health promotion in the School of Health Science at the National University of Ireland Galway since 2013. Catherine Anne completed her undergraduate degree in Social Science at University College Dublin (UCD) and a Masters in Health Policy at the London School of Economics (LSE). She initially worked for six years in the area of community based addiction care and mental health in Ireland and the United Kingdom in a clinical and research remit. After which she joined the School of Applied Social Science at UCD where she worked as a Research Assistant and University Teacher.   She was awarded her PhD from UCD in 2013 for her study ' The management of problem alcohol use among patients attending primary care for opiate substitution treatment’. The PhD was part of a Health Research Board funded project, and the findings were used to develop clinical guidelines for the management of problem alcohol use among drug users in in primary care. She was also a co-reviewer and co-author on a Cochrane Systematic Review – “Psychosocial interventions for problem alcohol use among drug users”.     Catherine Anne is actively involved in the promotion of compassion, empathy and resilience in healthcare professionals and is a facilitator for the Schwartz Rounds at Galway University Hospital.  

Research Interests

My work and research interest to date has been in public health and health promotion and policy. I have focused on the areas of drug and alcohol addiction, mental health and primary care. More recently I have been research compassion fatigue and burn out among medical students and healthcare professionals and initiatives to combat this and promote mental health and well-being.

Description:
Health Research Board funded study examining the management of problem alcohol use amongst problem drug users in primary care, the findings of which have been used to develop clinical guidelines with an expert panel group.

Description:
A Cochrane systematic review to assess the effects of psychosocial interventions for problem alcohol use in illicit drug users (principally problem drug users of opiates and stimulants). It evaluated information from randomised trial (four studies that examined 594 people with drug problems).

Description: Senperforto addressed the need for Sexual and Gender Based Violence (SGBV) prevention in the reception and asylum sector. Research investigated the knowledge, attitudes, practice and needs of both professionals and young residents in the European reception and asylum sector.

Description: A large scale follow-up study of seven social housing estates in Ireland, aiming to assess social change in a ten-year period and assess the effects of the economic prosperity and development of area based funding and development of welfare systems.
