Under the Microscope
Under the Microscope
Staff Lead(s):
Dr Alanna Stanley. Anatomy
Dr. Kerry Thompson. Anatomy
Purpose:
Under the Microscope began in 2014 when a pilot project was funded and established between three project partners, National University of Ireland Galway (NUIG) (Via EXPLORE Funding), The Microscopy Society of Ireland (MSI) and the Royal Microscopical Society (RMS) in the UK. The Under the Microscope team aim to directly engage and promote educational activities concerned with microscopy for the benefit of the general public and the scientific community.
Impact:
Since 2014 roughly 3000 children have gained access to these microscopes in schools all over Ireland. Feedback is regularly collated for community impact and also to report to the supporting societies who provide the kits and funding. Most teachers said they would be more confident to carry out STEM activities with their classes after their experience with the kit. This partnership offers a great opportunity for scientists and clinicians to share their scientific knowledge, build communication and presentation skills and promote research. It offers our students a chance to share their enthusiasm for microscopy and the scientific method to a younger eager audience. Under the microscope is part of a much larger programme parentally hosted by the RMS in the UK.
