Staff Lead(s):
Dr. Louise Horrigan (Physiology)
Ms. Catherine Loughrey (Physiology)
Purpose:
This is an outreach programme that is provided to primary school children to introduce them to physiology in a fun and hands-on way. Children investigate the power of their own saliva using tools such as test tubes and pipettes. Workshops are provided both in schools and on-campus in the Human Biology Building. This year we provided the workshop through the medium of Irish as well as English. A bursary has been provided by the Galway Science and Technology Festival to provide the workshop during science week. A modified version of the workshop was also given in 2017 as part of the 'Healthy Heroes' Outreach event provided by the ASMI Society.
Impact:
By bringing physiology to children throughout Co. Galway in a fun hands-on way, the workshop makes physiology and the University accessible to children. They greatly enjoy the workshops, and feedback from teachers has been very positive. It is also a support for teachers in their provision of STEM education to their classes.
The provision of this workshop by enthusiastic staff and students contributes to a positive public image of the University and of the School of Medicine. Some of the workshops took place in the Human Biology Building this year, allowing us to show the fantastic facilities we have for students in Physiology. It also provides a volunteering opportunity for undergraduate students, promoting their communication skills.
