MIROTS
Making Internationalisation a Reality for Occupational Therapy Students (MIROTS)
Staff Lead(s):
Professor Agnes Shiel (Lead)
Dr Carol Hills, Ms Jackie Fox and Dr Sinéad Hynes | Discipline of Occupational Therapy
Purpose:
MIROTS is an Erasmus+- funded project that brought together students and staff from NUI Galway, Lund University and University of Southampton to work with community groups through physical and web-exchange. One focus was to develop practitioners who are able to work in partnership with the clients and populations that they serve. There was particular focus on working in partnership with community groups who represent marginalised or socially excluded populations and to provide opportunities to challenge student’s own and national views. Aimed to develop practitioners who can advocate for the rights of individuals, families and communities.
Impact:
A number of learning activities were completed that aimed to be of use to the community partners:
- Completed a written role emerging placement report that demonstrate ‘added value’ of occupational perspective to support individuals, groups and communities.
- Created a video on a social exclusion issues that was of importance to community group.
- Developed a podcast based on capturing the voices of community partners.
Students and staff had opportunities to strengthen professional identity through reflection, debate and hearing the international and community perspectives. Students had the opportunity to visit sites that are outside of traditional areas of practice.
