Virus Removal Procedures
Virus Removal Procedures
If you suspect that your computer has a virus or if your computer has been disconnected from the campus network by Information Solutions and Services, then ISS have a set number of steps that should be followed to ensure the integrity of the device.
Please see below for steps for virus removal using both the McAfee Stinger and McAfee Virus Scan.
Installation Steps for Virus Removal - McAfee Stinger & Virus Scan
-
Save your files and shut down all open programs.
- Disconnect your computer from the network by unplugging the network cable from the back of your computer.
- Ask a colleague to download the Stinger file and download the latest VirusScan update file (select the 'Windows Intel' version) and copy them to a memory stick or CD in order to copy it onto your computer.
- Copy the downloaded file onto your computer and double-click on the update file to run it. (Prerequisite: McAfee version 8.5i must be installed)
Using McAfee Stinger & Virus Scan
- When your anti-virus software has updated, run a full scan of your computer using the steps below.
- Right-click on the VirusScan icon in the system tray (located at the bottom right-hand corner of the screen)
- From the menu, choose On-Demand Scan
- The VirusScan On-Demand Scan Properties dialogue box appears.
- Ensure that under Scan options ALL items are ticked i.e.
Include subfolders and Scan boot sectors (as shown above). - Click on the Detection tab
- Ensure that under What to scan, All files is selected (as shown above).
- Click the Exclusions button.
If any exclusion items exist, select the item and click Remove.
Click OK when the exclusion list is empty. - Click on the Actions tab.
- Ensure that under When a virus is found, the Primary Action is set to Clean files.
- Click Start.
The scan should detect any virus present and clean the files.
- Right-click on the VirusScan icon in the system tray (located at the bottom right-hand corner of the screen)
If the virus problems persist, contact the Service Desk for further information.
If the virus has been removed, you can reconnect the network cable to your computer, or contact the Service Desk if your network point has been disabled.
It is good practice at this stage to ensure the latest Microsoft security patches have been installed on your computer.
