The Irish Centre for Human Rights, in collaboration with the Palestine Solidarity Society and the Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion Office, invites you to a special lecture titled "Upholding Palestinian Rights: Academic Complicity, Legal Accountability, and Ethical Responsibility," featuring renowned speakers Francesca Albanese and Omar Barghouti.
This important conversation will critically explore Israel’s ongoing genocide in Palestine, highlighting state and institutional complicity, mechanisms of international legal accountability, and the ethical duties scholars and academic institutions have in confronting systemic atrocities. The lecture forms part of the University’s 2024 Nelson Mandela Anti-Racism Week.
Francesca Albanese is an international lawyer, specialized in human rights and the Middle East. Since May 2022, she has served as the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian territory occupied since 1967. An affiliate scholar at the Institute for the Study of International Migration at Georgetown University, Albanese is the author of several prestigious publications, including Palestinian Refugees in International Law (Oxford University Press, 2020), considered by many as a landmark in the literature on the subject, as well as other academic works on the legal situation in Israel/Palestine and Palestinian refugees.
Omar Barghouti is a Palestinian human rights defender, co-founder of the Palestinian-led Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement and the Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel (PACBI). He is a recipient of the 2017 Gandhi Peace Award. He holds a B.Sc. and an M.Sc. in Electrical Engineering from Columbia University, NY, and is pursuing a PhD in Philosophy (ethics) at the University of Amsterdam. He is the author of BDS: The Global Struggle for Palestinian Rights (Haymarket, 2011), and his views and opinions have been published in The Guardian, Washington Post, Le Monde, among many others.
