The Irish Centre for Human Rights is pleased to share that Professor Shane Darcy has been awarded funding under Research Ireland’s New Foundations scheme for his project titled Supporting accountability, facilitating exchange and engendering human rights in the protection, rebuilding and development of third-level education in Palestine (SAFEGUARD).

Scholars and places of higher learning are often deliberately targeted during times of armed conflict. This is exemplified in Gaza at present. SAFEGUARD will explore human rights and international law standards concerning the protection of third-level education during conflict and occupation. It will consider accountability for scholasticide in the Palestinian context well as avenues for reparations and issues relating to reconstruction. SAFEGUARD aims to advance research collaboration between universities in Ireland and Palestine by developing a roadmap for further cooperation aimed at enhancing the legal framework for the protection of third-level education during wartime, with a particular focus on Palestine.
