What courses should I take?

You should take the majority of your courses in your degree subjects whilst abroad. Exchange students are also encouraged to take one course in a subject that would give insight into the local culture such as music, political science, history, religion, or a beginner course in the local language. You will agree your subject choices with your University of Galway academic coordinator. 

How many credits should I take?

All programmes will require a minimum of 20 ECTs per semester but some programmes will require a minimum of 30 ECTs. The number of credits you are required to take depends on your Programme of study. Your Academic Coordinator or Study Abroad Coordinator will confirm this to you. 

How do I convert the local credits to ECTs?

• USA Usually, the conversion rate from ECTS to American credits is 2:1, meaning 60 ECTS would convert into 30 American credits. However, this conversion rate varies, as some universities in the U.S. may use different credit systems. Consult your University of Galway Coordinator if you're unsure of the credit conversion for your host destination.
• Hong Kong Each university in Hong Kong has their own credit system. Consult the international office website of the host destintation for credit conversion or contact your University of Galway Coordinator.
• Australia Each university in Australia has their own credit system. Consult the international office website of the host destintation for credit conversion or contact your University of Galway Coordinator.
• UK 1 credit is equal to 2ECTs.

What should I consult my Academic Coordinator about and when?

• During the application process, you may need propose a study plan for your chosen destination so should consult your Academic Coordinator for advice on module choices.
• On registration, all of your chosen subjects may not be available to due course limitations, you may need advice to identify alternative modules in this case. Any changes to your learning agreement should be discussed with your Academic Coordinator.
• Your Academic Coordinator will sign off on your Learning Agreement once you've agreed on your module choices.
• During your Study Abroad period, if you experience any issues with your course load or need to change one of your registered modules for any reason, you should discuss this with your Academic Coordinator.
• Your Academic Coordinator will also be responsible for converting the results on your transcript to equivalent University of Galway grades when you return after your study abroad.
