LEAS(Linux Environment for Academic Studies)
The Linux Environment for Academic Studies (LEAS) provides access to a Linux operating environment and software from any Windows computer connected to the wired campus network, including in PC Suites.
MySQL database accounts are also available on request by permanent staff at University of Galway to facilitate students working on database projects.
Who can use the service?
Academic staff and registered students of NUI, Galway can access the LEAS service if authorisation to access the service has been granted for their individual computer account. Following access authorisation, the user can authenticate to LEAS with the same username and password used to login to computers in PC Suites.
Requests for LEAS access authorisation are accepted from permanent staff at NUI, Galway only – please raise a support ticket by contacting the Service Desk. Students must request access from a relevant academic staff member.
Availability
LEAS is available 24 x 7.
Technical Information
There are two ways to access LEAS:
- Use Secure Shell (SSH) client
Access to the system may be made with any SSH client supporting SSH version 2. The SSH client is available in the PC Suites or as a freeware download. - Use NoMachine Desktop Virtualization client - NX Client
Free to download. This provides the user with a full GNOME session on their computer. The NX client is run in Windows and connects to the NX Server system running on the LEAS server. - Server Name: leas.nuigalway.ie
IP Address: 172.18.1.110
Note: Users are advised to set a low priority when running processes to avoid conflict with essential system processes.
Prerequisites required for the service
- Connection to the wired campus network
- Access authorisation is required for the user account

USB Key / Memory Stick / Flash Drive
A USBkey is a storage device integrated with a USB (Universal Serial Bus) interface. USB keys are typically removable and re-writable. Storage capacities typically range from 64 MB to 64 GB with steady improvements in size and price per gigabyte.
Port
A port is an interface for attaching external devices to a computer. It controls the rate at which data can be transferred between the computer and the attached device.
Using a USB Key in the PC Suites
ISS have disabled Autorun on the all computers in the PC Suites as a precautionary measure to prevent the spread of viruses. When autorun is disabled, a USB memory stick or software on a CD or DVD will no longer automatically start when inserted.
To access a USB stick or CD once it has been inserted.
- Double click on My Computericon on the desktop.
- Double click on Removable diskto open your USB key
- Open the file or folder you wish to access
USB Key has become corrupt
If your USB key has become corrupt, there are several free data recovery tools available that may be successful in recovering data. One example is TestDisk software - installation instructions and recovery information available. Please note that Information Solutions and Services do not take responsibility for user data
Scanning your USB stick for Viruses
ISS recommend that users frequently scan their USB devices for Viruses or Trojans, to do this right click on Removable Disk (E): and select Scan for Threats....
McAfee will then run its scan on your USB drive. If it finds any infections or threats, it will notify you.
If McAfee does not find anything, it will state this in the bottom left-hand corner of the scanning window. If McAfee has found something, it will alert you to it and state whether it’s been cleaned or deleted. If it does find a virus, it is important to follow up by running an anti-virus scan on ALL computers you have used this USB drive on.
How to open an Adobe(PDF) file from a web browser in the PC Suites
If you wish to open an Adobe (PDF) file in Blackboard or from any other web site in the PC Suites, please review the instructions below:
Using Internet Explorer
- Launch Internet Explorer from the NUI Galway Applications window
Do NOT use the Start menu. PDF documents will not open correctly if you launch IE7 using the Start button. An error will appear complaining about the version of Adobe Reader - Right-click on the Adobe (PDF) file, select Save Target As to save the file to your U: Drive
- Open My Computer, select the saved the Adobe (PDF) file and then open it.
Using Firefox
- Launch Firefox from the NUI Galway Applications window
- Right-click on the Adobe (PDF) file, select Save Target As to save the file to your U: Drive
- Open My Computer, select the saved the Adobe (PDF) file and then open it.
