Considering your options at University of Galway?
Considering your options at University of Galway?
If you’re feeling unsure about university life or thinking about leaving, you’re not alone, it’s okay to find it challenging. Before making any big decisions, here’s a couple of things you can do to both make your experience easier while exploring all your options:
Feeling Homesick or finding it hard to make friends?
Take small steps: Stay in touch with family, friends and those who support you, it’s okay to lean on them while you’re adjusting. After some time, you may notice that you want to step out of your comfort zone a little more so that you can settle in.
Make your space feel like home: Bring some comforts from home to decorate your room, like photos, posters, or your favorite bedding. A cozy room can make a big difference!
Find your tribe: Don’t forget, a lot of students are navigating the same situation, ready to make new friends but unsure where to start. Joining a club or society is one of the easiest ways to meet others who share your interests!
Dealing with medical concerns?
Talk to your doctor about whether continuing your course is realistic right now. If you need a break, deferring your course for a year might be an option. Have a chat with your course coordinator to figure out your options.
Worried about money?
Contact the Financial Supports team in Student Services to see what supports are available for you. Email financialaid@universityofgalway.ie or check out the financial aid fund for more info.
Nervous about leaving and possibly coming back to education later?
If you decide now isn’t the right time for you to be at university, that’s okay. Everyone’s journey is different, and sometimes taking a break can be the best thing for your personal growth. Remember, you can always return to university when you’re ready. There’s no limit to learning. If you do decide to leave, you can find everything you need to know about withdrawing from your course here.
Whatever you’re going through, remember you’re not alone, and there’s always support available. Don’t hesitate to ask for help, you've got this!
