Theophilus Akudjedu - PhD in Psychiatry

Theophilus Akudjedu

"I am currently registered on the PhD Psychiatry programme with current focus on brain segmentation techniques for volumetric analysis of subcortical structures in psychiatric and neurological disorders. I am also honoured to be in receipt of the College of Medicine, Nursing and Health Science Postgraduate Scholarship for my study. The University of Galway is one of the leading universities in the world with top quality teaching which is research focused. The learning environment is conducive with availability of all that is necessary to bring the best in you. The faculty members are friendly and helpful and are always keeping you involved in practice. My first day here was really memorable: one of my supervisors – Dr Dara Cannon met me at the Quadrangle and walked me to the Clinical Imaging Laboratory at the University hospital Campus and introduced me to all my colleagues. That was really friendly – she came out for me. I love Galway. It’s a beautiful, colourful city that offers a free relaxed atmosphere. Irish Culture? The people are super-friendly in nature and that offers a balance to my academic life as a postgraduate student."

— Theophilus Akudjedu, PhD in Psychiatry, from Ghana. Theo is also a College of Medicine, Nursing and Health Science scholar.

Patricia A. Akudjedu - MSc International Management

My University of Galway student experience:

My time as an international student studying outside of my home country (Ghana) for the first time, had been a period of intellectual, professional and socio-cultural transformation. Not only did the postgraduate program help me gain analytical research skills and in-depth knowledge and expertise in the principles and application of business and management models from a global perspective but more importantly, it helped me experience new cultures. Diversity and inclusion is characteristic of University of Galway and being part of culturally diverse groups helped me gain cross-cultural and inter-cultural skills.

Of note, the multicultural academic and professional environment inspired me to uncover my potentials and skill-sets. Furthermore, I believe the exposure and practical experiences gained will strengthen my foundation for a future global career as I now feel ready for the global job market.

My experience of Galway and Ireland overall:

My experience in Galway and Ireland had been wonderful. Overall, University of Galway is a very conducive and highly recommended place for academic work. Nice people, food and culture in the West of Ireland.
