Director of NUIG-Geotech
Dr. Bryan McCabe
Dr. Bryan McCabe graduated in 1997 with a first class Honours Degree (and Gold Medal) in Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering from Trinity College Dublin (TCD). He was awarded his PhD entitled "The behaviour of pile groups in Belfast soft clay" by TCD in 2002.
In Sept. 2001, following a year as a contract lecturer at TCD, Bryan joined the Department of Civil Engineering at NUI Galway as a Junior Lecturer (Lecturer Below Bar - LBB) in geotechnical engineering. He spent the 2004-05 academic year on secondment to Keller Ground Engineering, based in Coventry, UK, working as a senior geotechnical engineer specialising in ground improvement and foundation design, while also playing an active role in the R&D activities of the company. Upon return to NUI Galway, he was promoted to Lecturer Above the Bar (LAB). Bryan served as Head of Civil Engineering for 3 years (Jul 2014 - August 2017) and was promoted to Senior Lecturer in October 2017.
Bryan's research interests include piled foundations, ground improvement and tunnelling. He has supervised 6 PhD and 5 MEngSc students to completion, is currently supervising 4 PhD, 1 MEngSc and 1 MApplSc students, and has published 85 papers in peer-reviewed journals and conference proceedings (click for Google Scholar profile, ResearchGate profile). He was a recipient of a President's Award for Excellence in Teaching from NUI Galway in 2012. He is also a Chartered Engineer (2006) and Fellow (2014) of Engineers Ireland.
