Research
Research
Our research attracts significant national and European funding. We were the first, and only, general practice discipline to be awarded the Royal Academy of Medicine in Ireland Award for Overall Best Research Paper in 2011. We were the lead investigators on the largest non-pharmaceutical trial ever conducted on the island of Ireland, the SPHERE study, which recruited 48 general practices and 903 patients. We contribute to methodological and ethical advances in research, for example we conducted the first ever opt-out recruitment strategy in Irish general practice. We host the Out of Hospital Cardiac Arrest Register which now has full national coverage. Ireland’s first and largest university affiliated general practice research network, WestREN, is based at the discipline.
The HRB Primary Care Clinical Trials Network Ireland (HRB Primary Care CTNI) is a five year HRB funded Network which started in July 2015. The Network builds on previous collaborations with partners in RSCI, QUB and the ICGP.
