Exam Results

FA result of ’Pass by Compensation’ means that you do not have to repeat the exam. 
It is recommended that you check the rules for your particular course. If you have any queries about progressing or subject choice for next year, please contact your College Office directly.

Pass by Compensation is only applied in cases where its application enables the student to pass the Examination as a whole.

The pass standard for a Module is 40%. However a student with marks of less than 40% in one or more modules will be deemed to have passed the Stage provided

• the aggregate mark for all modules of the Stage is at least 40%
• the mark in every module is 35% or more
• the module(s) with marks in the range 35-39% total 15 ECTS or less 

As some courses may have slightly different compensations rules, the rules for your course should be confirmed in the Marks ans Standards on the Exams Policies&Procedures page.

You have the option of a recheck and/or an appeal of an exam mark. 

It is strongly recommended that you first consult with your lecturer about the exam mark before applying for a recheck. 

In order to apply for an appeal, you must consult your lecturer in advance. 

A consultation day is available for students. Please consult your Module Leader.

We recommend that students who will be travelling abroad during the summer install and configure the Microsoft Authenticator app on their mobile devices before they leave Ireland. The Microsoft Authenticator app will allow you to continue to verify your identity when accessing your Emails, Microsoft 365 services, Canvas and the Exam results portal from abroad.

If you are currently using the SMS or Phone Call options to verify your identity, you will receive a verification code via SMS or a Phone Call to your Irish SIM card, which may not work or may incur extra charges depending on your location and network provider.

To avoid any inconvenience or delay in accessing University IT Services, including your Exam results, when abroad, please follow the instructions to update your MFA to use the Microsoft Authenticator app on the following web pages.

It is not possible to carry any failed modules into the following academic year. If following the Autumn repeat session, you have any failed modules remaining,it is not possible to progress to the next year of your course.

While we endeavor to resolve all appeals before the repeats, it is possible the results of an appeal will not be available before the repeat exam of the module in question. A student should always be prepared to sit the repeat as there is no guarantee that the result of an appeal is favourable or available before Autumn exams commence.

The Autumn exams are a second opportunity for students to pass their exams and progress into the next year of study. Non attendance at these exams may require the student to repeat the year. Contact your School/College to discuss your options.

If you are planning to go on leave of absence, you must apply and be granted permission before your Leave of Absence period is due to start. Note: Retrospective Leave of Absence applications may be granted in exceptional circumstances. You will need to discuss with your College/School Office and Programme Director.

The numbers of registered undergraduate students varies across colleges and schools, allowing for the results of those with smaller numbers to be processed more quickly, which in turn allows for some results to be released earlier than others.

Where 'Fail', 'Incomplete' or 'Deferred' appears as the Overall result on your transcript of results, you will be automatically registered to take modules in the Autumn session of examinations. Repeat examination dates can be found on the Exam Timetable page. For repeat coursework, contact the relevant Discipline.
