Study Abroad - Outgoing Students
DSS Support for Outgoing NUI Galway Erasmus and Study Abroad Students
Preparation is key to ensuring your Erasmus / Study Abroad will be accessible and enriching. Doing your research in advance will help you to know what to expect and enable you to best prepare for a successful and enjoyable experience.
A good place to start this preparation is by checking out AHEAD’s Studying Abroad Guide which gives a comprehensive overview of all the different things you may need to consider before going away such as choosing a destination, preparations for travel, funding and supports while abroad as well as details of past student experiences.
Considerations for Outgoing Students:
Choosing your destination
- Check out the websites of potential host universities. Do they mention disability supports for students? Have they an equivalent to the University of Galway Disability Support Service?
Your Reasonable Accommodation Needs
- Understanding your own personal requirements will help you find the most appropriate location/host institution. Consider the existing supports and accommodations you require to manage your disability, ongoing physical or mental health condition, or specific learning difficulty. Which are non-negotiable? Are there countries or institutions where these supports will not be possible?
- You may not receive the same accommodations in your host university as in the University of Galway, if you are unable to get the accommodations you need, can you adapt or create alternative strategies to address them?
- Students with mobility conditions may need to consider accessible accommodation options, in-country infrastructure, and transit systems.
Health Considerations
- Do you require the administration of any special medications, and will you have the same access to these medications as in Ireland?
Research the Student Supports in your Host University
- Identify what student supports are available in your host university (Accommodation, Disability Support, Counselling, Health etc.) and who are the key contacts/link personnel within these services?
- What is the process for applying to receive these supports?
- What type of reasonable accommodations are on offer for students who attend this university and what documentation do you require to register

Erasmus / Study Abroad Planning Meeting
If you are registered with the Disability Support Service and going on an Erasmus or Study Abroad Programme, you may benefit from a conversation with the University of Galway DSS Placement Planning Coordinator to discuss how best to prepare for your trip, disclosure to your host university, any reasonable accommodations requirements that you may have and funding options, if applicable.
Please complete the following Placement Planning Meeting Request Form or contact disabilityservice@universityofgalway.ie to arrange a meeting to talk through your options. Ideally, these preparatory conversations should begin soon after accepting your offer to study at your host university.
