Community Engagement
Community Engagement
At University of Galway, we believe that the best learning takes place when you apply what you learn in a real world context. That's why many of our courses include work placements or community projects.
Placement Meeting
Placement Planning Meeting
If you are going on a placement as part of your academic studies and registered with the Disability Support Service, it is recommended that you attend a placement planning meeting prior to beginning placement. While the meeting is voluntary and you may not require reasonable accommodations or intend to disclose a disability while on placement, you may benefit from having a conversation with a Disability Advisor to identify any potential challenges you may encounter.
At this meeting, you will have the opportunity to discuss with a Disability Advisor supports you may require while on placement and if you would like to discuss disclosing a disability, ongoing physical or mental health condition, or specific learning difficulty to your placement site.
Placement Planning Report
If you choose to disclose to your placement site, a Placement Planning Report may be completed at the meeting in collaboration with the Disability Support Service and your placement coordinator. This report is similar to a LENS report but is specific to placement.
It is a two-page plan that reveals any relevant information in relation to the impact (or potential impact) of your disability, ongoing physical or mental health condition, or specific learning difficulty on your ability to complete the tasks associated with the placement position and specifies in what circumstances you might require reasonable accommodations while on placement.
Having a prepared and well thought-out disclosure document prior to beginning placement can help remove some of the anxiety and unknowns surrounding disclosure. The placement planning report can then be shared with an employer at whatever point you decide to disclose, if at any. The report, or details of its contents, will never be shared with a placement site by NUI Galway without your consent.
Request a Placement Meeting
While the optimal time for meetings is before going on placement, you can contact your Disability Advisor (listed at the bottom of your LENS report) or complete the following Placement Planning Meeting Request Form to request a meeting at any point on your placement journey.
Alternatively, you can contact disabilityservice@nuigalway.ie to arrange a conversation about placement.
Review Meetings
It is important that on completion of placement, you reflect on your experience of managing your disability, ongoing physical or mental health condition, or specific learning difficulty in a professional environment and consider your experience of having disclosed or indeed not disclosed.
If you are going on another placement as part of your academic studies, you may wish to arrange a placement review meeting to discuss your experiences, and if necessary, make changes to your support provisions.
