MSc Sustainability Leadership Induction, September 2023

On Thursday 07 September, we were delighted to welcome the first cohort of the MSc Sustainability Leadership programme, as they commenced their studies at University of Galway. The students were welcomed on campus by Professor Alma McCarthy, Dean, J.E. Cairnes School of Business and Economics and Dr Orla Lenihan, Programme Director. As part of their Orientation, students were joined by industry guest speaker, John O'Sullivan, Environmental Advisor at SSE plc and University of Galway Sustainability Officer, Michelle O’Dowd Lohan. The students also enjoyed a guided tour of our beautiful campus in the sunshine and our students captured their first class photograph at The Quadrangle.

On Friday, classes commenced with Dr Johanna Clancy’s module Responsible Management and Leadership. Dr Clancy’s module is underpinned by the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and analyses the challenges related to ethics, responsibility and sustainability (ERS) facing business leaders. Through a balance of theory and practice our students will generate real-life solutions towards resolving these. It was not all study as on Friday evening the class enjoyed their first dinner together at the Hardiman Hotel, Galway. Our energetic students returned bright and early Saturday morning for another engaging and thought provoking session with Dr Clancy.

We would like to wish our students the best of luck as they embark on their journey over the next two years and we are looking forward to supporting them every step of the way. Thank you to our students, guests, and faculty for a great start to the programme.

The MSc Sustainability Leadership will equip students with the leadership skills to address the challenges, risks, and opportunities that environmental sustainability and social responsibility present for contemporary businesses and organisations. This new MSc programme directly addresses the identified gap in sustainability leadership skills. Participants will learn to value the importance of preserving relationships with communities, employees, and the environment, therefore ensuring responsible business models. Through a holistic consideration of environmental, economic, and social resources, students will develop the expertise to lead organisations through the transition towards a sustainable planet and society.
