Overview
This module is designed to equip the students with all the tools needed to be able to identify gemstones correctly and to differentiate natural gemstones from other varieties such as treated or synthetic. Hand specimens will be studied using some basic gemmological instrumentations and students will be taught how to record the properties of numerous gem varieties (e.g. Garnet) including materials of an organic nature (e.g. Amber). Practicals on campus on Saturday mornings at 10am till 4:30pm (including up to 1 hour lunch break).
Entry Requirements
Applicants must be over 21 years of age.
What you will Learn
Also offering micro-credential EOS205: Gemstones and the Commercial World which is another micro-credential from Diploma in Gemmology.
Learning Outcomes
- Classify gemstones (natural gemstone, synthetic gemstone, manmade gemstone and assembled gemstone)
- Identify different inclusion types which will help to separate natural from synthetic gemstones
- Undertake different techniques to enhance the colour and clarity of gemstones, to hide flaws and make gems more valuable
- Understand different techniques used to manufacture synthetic gemstones
- Identify physical and optical properties of Glass, Zircon, CZ, Feldspar, spinel, Quartz, Peridot, Garnet, Beryl, Chrysoberyl.
