Overview

This module offers an insight of the human body, focusing in particular on its form (Anatomy) and function (Physiology). Anatomy is the science of body structures and their relationship to each other. Originally this information was discovered by clinical dissection of cadavers and nowadays this knowledge has been enhanced by modern imaging techniques such as MRI. Physiology is the study of the function of each of these anatomical structures, in essence how each body part works. Its elucidation followed many years of scientific inquiry including experimentation, clinical examination, and an understanding of pathology (disease).

Entry Requirements

Applicants should be over 21 years. Applications can be considered using Recognition of Prior Learning.

What you will Learn

This micro-credential is divided into 12 units:

  • Unit 1 introduces the importance of homeostasis of the human body; describes the key concepts of anatomical regions, directions, and planes and discusses cells and tissues of the living organism.
  • Unit 2 covers the integumentary system.
  • Unit 3 investigates the skeletal system.
  • Unit 4 describes the muscular system.
  • Unit 5 deals with the nervous system.
  • Unit 6 introduces the endocrine system.
  • Unit 7 describes the cardiovascular system.
  • Unit 8 deals with the haematological system.
  • Unit 9 is concerned with the lymphatic system.
  • Unit 10 investigates the respiratory system.
  • Unit 11 explores the gastrointestinal system.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Describe the body’s eleven systems (Integumentary System, Skeletal System, Muscular System, Nervous System, Endocrine System, Cardiovascular System, Digestive System, Urinary System, Lymphatic System, Respiratory System and Reproductive System)
  2. Explain interrelationships among molecular, cellular, tissue and organ functions.
  3. Explain contributions of organs and systems to the maintenance of homeostasis as well as identifying causes and effects of homeostatic imbalances
  4. Describe how to acquire, analyse and evaluate reliable scientific information from appropriate scientific literature
  5. Communicate scientific material using appropriate medical, scientific and technical vocabulary

Assessments

  • Continuous Assessment (100%)
