Overview

The aim of the Automation 2 module is to give you some important insights into the application of automation in industry as detailed in the module aims of Automation 1. 

Entry Requirements

Automation 1 must be completed before applying for Automation 2. Applicants should have a Diploma at NFQ Level 7 of 90 ECTS minimum, in a Science, Engineering or Technical area. Applicants must be over 21 years of age. Applications can be considered using Recognition of Prior Learning.

What you will Learn

The Automation 2 module introduces material transport systems, outlines the use of storage systems, presents an overview of automated manufacturing, examines automated assembly systems, investigates the use of flexible manufacturing systems, focuses on the use made of inspection technologies and considers how product design is generally carried out in modern production environments using computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing systems, operating in combination.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Identify material transport systems, which are a major part of the automation system implemented in many production environments
  2. Demonstrate solving complex automated forms of storage systems, and explain the use made of automated storage and retrieval systems, and carousel-type storage systems
  3. Investigate the components of a flexible manufacturing system, its applications and benefits, and issues of planning and implementation
  4. Identify inspection technologies, contact and non-contact techniques, plus the differences between measuring and gauging
  5. Describe how computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing systems operate in combination, in product design
