Overview
Items such as sensors, motors, pneumatics, Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) programming and robotics are discussed. Material handling and storage are also considered. Automation is used extensively in industry and the module addresses how these systems are used in industry. For example, quality control, increased throughput and increasing competitive advantage.
Entry Requirements
Applicants should have a Diploma at NFQ Level 7 of 90 ECTS minimum, in a Science, Engineering or Technical area. Applicants must be over 21 years of age. Applications can be considered using Recognition of Prior Learning.

Learning Outcomes
- Describe the core elements of automation technology applied in industry and the main principles behind various automation solutions industry
- Apply analytical methods to size and specify automation solutions in a number of industrial applications
- Design, program and deploy simple automation devices for storage, transportation and coordination of automated systems
- Solve problems based on a defined set of requirements for automation in a number of industrial scenarios
- Integrate the main automation components and technologies to create automated factories
