COBRA endeavours to engage in bioethical scholarship of a high calibre and welcomes multi- and cross-disciplinary enquiry.

One of COBRA's main objectives is to contribute to the development of high quality research and scholarship in the area of ethics and bioethics.  We are actively involved in research on many  topics, such as disability, civic engagement, human subject research, professional ethics, research ethics and embryonic stem cell research. 

COBRA has received funding for a number of on-going bioethical research projects and endeavours to forge research collaborative links with colleagues within University of Galway and colleagues elsewhere.

Some of COBRA's many research projects include:

  • Ethics committees and ethics review of children’s research in Ireland, commissioned by the Office of the Minister for Children and Youth Affairs.
  • Ethical issues in stem cell research, with a particular focus on the Irish context, in cooperation with the Regenerative Medicine Institute (REMEDI)
  • Academic ethics and civic responsibility in higher education, with particular focus on the service learning pedagogy, in cooperation with the Community Knowledge Initiative (CKI) at NUI Galway
  • Disability: ethical issues and public policy
  • Health Care Ethics and Clinical Ethics
