History (MLitt)
History is a vibrant and research-active department with a wide variety of areas of expertise as listed below. We welcome applications for study towards research degrees from candidates with suitable qualifications and specialist interests related to those of our staff. To achieve a M.Litt., students must submit a piece of original research on a historical theme amounting to approximately 40,000 words.
Important note for MLitt research degree prospective students
Graduates wishing to pursue the research degree of MLitt may do so for the purposes of a stand-alone award. It is not a progression route to a PhD degree. Therefore, students registered for the MLitt research degree have no automatic transfer opportunity to a PhD programme. However, students on PhD research have the possibility to exit their programme early with an MLitt providing that they have satisfied the requirements for that award.
How to Apply
Applications are made online via the University of Galway Postgraduate Applications System
Before applying, we strongly urge prospective applicants to complete a preliminary proposal and/or discuss their plans with the Director of Graduate Studies Dr Tomás Finn tomas.finn@universityofgalway.ie
Admission to a research degree is at the discretion of the potential supervisor and the head of department, and is based on a proposal from the applicant following discussion with the member of staff whose academic area of interest is most appropriate. Candidates should have obtained an honours degree in History (Second Class Honours, Grade 1 [or equivalent international qualification] minimum).
