On January 30th 2025, Dr Audrey Morley (Geography, University of Galway, Ryan Institute, iCRAG) took part in the AMOC Project Planning Meeting organized by JPI Climate and JPI Oceans in Brussels. This joint initiative aims to develop a Review Report on the latest State of Knowledge on the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC). This effort, co-led by Prof. Dr. Hans-Otto Pörtner (Alfred-Wegener-Institute, Germany), is part of the Equinox Process, which accelerates the transfer of scientific knowledge into policy and action.

With growing concerns about ocean surface warming and the weakening of major ocean currents, this initiative aims to provide policymakers with the latest scientific insights on AMOC’s critical role in the climate system.

To kickstart this work, Dr Morley and Dr McCarthy (Maynooth University) were invited to contribute Irish expertise to outline the scope and direction of this crucial assessment.  Within the next two months the Scientific Steering Committee and Chapter Lead authors will be nominated to progress this important initiative. Stay tuned!
