Research Seminar - Adolescents avoiding using public toilets: a universal public health problem, still unrecognised

Research Seminar

Based on recent statistics, we consider that access to toilets, and more precisely school toilets, is no more an issue in the European region. Indeed, compared to the global figure of 63% of schools equipped of a basic sanitation service in 2019, the rates in Europe and North America are much higher (99%).

The differences are of the same level regarding handwashing facilities in schools (57% vs. 98%) (UNICEF, 2020). However, use does not only rely on the presence of a given facility. Complementary perspectives will illustrate the scope of this universal yet unrecognised and under discussed public health issue: the avoidance of public and school toilets use by adolescents.
