Module Description: This module introduces students to the concept of Community-Based Learning (also known as Service Learning).It aims to link classroom learning and community service to enrich learning experiences and emphasize civic responsibility. Students learn and develop through active participation in service experiences that meet real community needs. The module is integrated into the students’ curriculum to provide structured time to think, talk and report about their activities. All students will work as part of a group or team (n = 3 – 5 students per group). 
  
Learning Outcomes: 
On completion of this module, students should be able to:  
  • Form a respectful partnership with a community group where the student learns from the community and the community learns from the student - Assessed via reflective writing and partner feedback (survey) 
  • Translate academic learning to functional use in a real-life setting - Assessed in presentations and report 
  • Make a contribution of time and expertise to a community group in order to development of a sense of civic responsibility - Assessed via reflective writing and partner feedback (survey) 
  • Perform project work as a team member with effective skills in the areas of communication, critical thinking, project management, reflective thinking and project evaluation - Assessed in presentations and report 
  • Understand the importance of collaboration, leadership, creativity, resourcefulness and taking responsibility when undertaking project work - Assessed in presentations and report
