Dr Elizabeth Hurley Profile

Lecturer in Sustainability & Education for Sustainable Development

Centre for Excellence in Learning and Teaching (CELT)

I am an educator with over fifteen years of experience in secondary and higher education focused on environmental systems and sustainable development. Prior to joining the Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching (CELT) in August 2024, I worked at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in the Center for Leadership for Global Sustainability (CLiGS). In this role I led interdisciplinary collaborative curriculum and program design efforts, annual program evaluations, intercultural competence development of faculty and staff, and short-term study abroad experiences.

My expertise is in the design of curriculum and instruction that supports education for sustainable development in disciplinary contexts. More specifically, I have expertise in pedagogy that facilitates the development of students’ intercultural competence, which is implicit in UNESCO’s key competencies for sustainability. I am especially interested in applying curriculum design frameworks within collaborative, interdisciplinary teams to transform curriculum and developing educators’ competencies in education for sustainable development.
