Internationalisation
In line with the National Education Strategy 2030 , the University of Galway is on a journey to create a more globally diverse, and culturally rich, learning and working experience.
As part of our internationalisation strategy, we have established a dedicated Global Employability Service within the Career Development Centre to provide customised employability support to meet the needs of an increasingly diverse and mobile student population.
The Global Employability Team supports:
- International Students with their transition to employment here in Ireland ensuring the students are job-ready for the Irish labour market.
- Domestic Students that would like to pursue employment outside of Ireland upon completion of their studies.
Hiring an International Student
According to the HEA, more than 35,000 International Students came to study in Ireland in 2022/2023. Many are undertaking higher level qualifications such as Master’s and PhDs in sectors like STEM and business where the Expert Group on Future Skills Need has identified skills and talent shortages. Ibec emphasises that diversity and inclusion is good for business and there is significant global research to confirm this; as such the University encourages employers to consider equality, diversity and inclusion in their graduate recruitment.
Why should your organisation consider hiring an international student?
- Employers with a diverse workforce benefit from enhanced brand appeal and financial performance, ethnically diverse organisations are more likely to outperform peers by a staggering 35%
- Excellent way to fill skills shortages in areas such as IT, engineering, science and business.
- Expand your talent pool and develop your workforce language skills
- Grow your exports by harnessing international graduates' home country knowledge to support your market access strategy
Did you know that Ireland offers excellent post-study employment visa opportunities for non-EEA students through the Third Level Graduate Programme.
Please see our Employer Visa FAQ for more information.

Global Graduate Opportunities
Having a global perspective is highly regarded by employers and is key to developing an innovative mind-set. Undertaking a work placement or graduate job overseas helps students expand their global network, offers unique insights and supports the development of valuable skills. In gaining global work experience they can explore new, diverse cultures and develop cross-cultural communication skills which are essential to career development.
Here at the University of Galway, we recognise the benefits of supporting our students to gain global experience. We are seeking employers who would like to offer global graduate rotations. If your organisation includes global mobility in your graduate programme, please contact us at careers@universityofgalway.ie
