Undergraduate economics options

There are many options for studying economics at NUI Galway.

You can specialise in economics as part of the BA degree and B.Comm degrees. In both cases, you can sample the subject in early year(s) and opt to take more courses in later years.

Economics is also a core part of our specialised BSc. (Financial Mathematics and Economics) degree, and is central to the BA (Public and Social Policy) degree.

Other undergraduate degrees with a particular focus may often provide some options in economics. For example, economics options exist for students in a number of BA (Connect) degrees as well as in business degrees such as the B.Comm (Accounting) and the B.Sc. (Business Information Systems).

Remember, we teach university-level economics from 'scratch'; you don't need to have studied economics before (e.g., at Leaving Cert level). Most of the students who are studying economics now have not taken the subject before.

Why study economics?

Economics is an exciting and challenging area of study, and has never been more relevant for so many people. Our graduates explore diverse and rewarding career paths, grounded in economics.

For the last few years, economics has been central to public debate domestically and globally. As economies--including Ireland's--have boomed and then crashed, citizens and policy makers have intensively discussed the causes and consequences of global economic crises. They have looked to economics and to economists (often critically) to provide explanations--and solutions. Beyond all this, economics has always had much to contribute to our understanding of a wide range of social and market issues.

Economics graduates are highly valued by a range of employers: as a degree subject, it can open a wide range of career options in public and private sectors.

There has rarely been a better time to study economics at university level.
